Book Klub was started in spring of 1996 in Venice, California, as a continuation of book clubs from Cambridge, Massachusetts.

We meet once a month to discuss the book that we selected at the previous meeting. Members take turns hosting, and the host provides food and drink. We spend about a third of our time catching up on our personal lives and movies, a third discussing the book, and a third selecting the next book.

We start by having one member summarize the book, which always leads to a discussion of whatever aspects we liked/disliked or found confusing or intriguing.

|
The members who have brought suggestions take turns pitching their book(s). We generally stick to novels, favor classics over first works, and look for books which have won awards or which get good recommendations from trustworthy people who have read them. [The actual selection process is far too complicated and mercurial to explain, so let's just say that we vote.]
